5 Ways to Make Reading Fun!

1. LET THEM LEAD

Give them a sense of control + let their interests lead the way. Let them pick the book. Let them turn the pages. Let them skip pages or stay on one page forever. Let them tell you when they are all done!

2. LET THEM “READ”

Kids LOVE to be the “teacher.” Boost their confidence and let their imagination run wild as they tell you their version of the story using the pictures as their guide. *Bonus: this is a wonderful way to build vocabulary + strengthen narrative skills.

3. LET THEM MOVE

Who says you need to sit to read? Encourage movement breaks or read the whole book on the move! Little bodies need to move and young minds can only focus for so long without needing to wiggle.

4. DON’T QUIZ

Reading should be light + pressure-free. Reduce questions and increase comments. Keep questions playful, and try using open-ended comments about the story (e.g., “Oh no, she’s worried”) and “I wonder” statements to encourage discussion.

5. ACT IT OUT

Get into character and get silly with it (heck, grab some props or costumes)! Laughter equals FUN, which leads to increased engagement and learning opportunities. Bring the drama; it’ll keep them coming back for more!
